The pressing to see the briefing would have told you what they were bombing and what bearing they would make after dropping.

Ah I see.
1. Speculating about the precise location of the target (at 15:27), was just due to map familiarity, and not having thought too much about the brief. I'm more interested in maving my eyes outside the cockpit when flying a fighter rather than consulting kneeboards, maps and instruments.
I'm not going to open the map with my icon showing on it to "check" where I am or where the objective is if I can get away with it. If the map didn't/doesn't have icons I might use it more (??). This is just a self limitation for realism sake.

I only really daperted from the escort position at 20:10 chasing a 109 who was traling them. The total time separated from them was less then 2.4 minutes. In that time they would have covered ~13km accross the ground (my turning fight left me in roughly the same area). Even at 15 to 20km distance I should be able to pick out a formation of A20s visually. Climbing up to try and make visual contact was the right thing to do, coupled by my thinking that not enough time had passed for them to reach target, bomb, turn and recover the distance. As above, I really don't want to be checking icons on a map for this.

2. Listen to the audio at 23:44 "I also know the bombers are heading back to X.. so I can probably head in that direction". I think it's pretty obvious that I wasn't "confused" about where they were supposed to be headed. My only unknown was whether or not the bomb drop had already occured (24:49), and thus whether I was ahead, or behind the bombers. In any event I bumped into more fighters before resolving the RV.
I guess in future I can make a note of the expected "time on target" and base my decsiions on that. However, if realism to be be embraced, times-on-target should be treated as little more than wild speculation - almost nobody ever makes it to the target right when they expecetd to be there . . .

At 37:20 I decided to deliberately ignore RV-ing again with the bombers having spent a good 10 minutes in combat of one variety or the other picking off straggling 109s. By this point it was obvious that the bombers would have made it well south. I had recieved the "mission complete" message long before.

Fair enough. That is a good reason. Are you sure you are forced to have icons though? I have not played the career for a while but I am pretty certain I remember having to find my way home without aids.

Isn’t it a setting you can turn on and off in your difficulty settings?

I haven't looked for a while.
I thought that your own aircraft always showed?
Maybe it's worth another look . .

I don't recall my aircraft showing on the map with the settings I have. In fact, I'm certain it doesn't because of how often I get lost over those farm fields....

25 missions in.... this mission actually showed off some of the more impressive elements of the damage modelling in IL2. Each "victory" was quite different with respect to how the enemy ac/ pilot responded to the damage I inflicted and there was a reasonable correlation bewteen where my hits appeared to land and how the enemy ac reacted.
There was none of the insta-wing-break either, which I've seen in a lot of previous missions.

25 missions... you are obviously warming to this game.

2:14 -- Just scraped over the hill top. Just. Knowing my luck, Dixon would have built a windmill right in the summit. :P Mind you, later (20:12) there were some Hs 129s (what you refer to as "those duck things") that didn't quite manage!

3:09 -- Mission complete. Really? Having seen the rest of the footage, that message was probably just too early (or badly triggered). The action was definitely there later 13:40+)

11:14 -- "... I can do this with ease. Oh! I've lost sight!" Hehe...

14:04 -- Bomber? Or maybe Fallschirmjäger!

14:20 -- Head-on pilot kill? Doesn't the engine block and forward plate-glass protect him? I thought that was the idea -- not so much for air-to-air but for when doing ground attack. (This is a serious question, not criticism... I have no idea.)

16:25 -- Nice shot. Took about 5 bullets. For me, I would have emptied the entire magazine and still not hit him.

18:00 -- Non-streaming water on the windscreen. Grrr... Pet hate with BoX.

18:51 -- Spitfires? We saw what looked like a P-39 before and you are in a Yak 1... quite a mix.

22:18 -- That brake sound is like the He 111s from CloD.

23:00 -- Six air-victories. Well done.

Right. Thanks for that video. Perfect watching over breakfast. Time for me to go to work now.

PS: I like the new "highlights only" format.
