Yeah I know, hype is the mind killer, and it's already been delayed by several years, and even the stuff that's been delayed for several years has been delayed for half a year more than that...

But it's pretty fancy.

OK. I 'm going to say it. "Imagine if RSI had made a flightsim. London & Berlin & Moscow & Tobruk & Port Moresby & Midway & Malta all modelled in one world & if you wanted to ferry a B24 from America to Alexandria via East Anglia there is nothing to stop you. Drive a Panzer from Germany to Paris via the Ardennes. Ferry a P40 to Burma to help keep Japan at bay." OK at this point we would only have the Stalingrad area modelled plus promises that soon we will be able to fly to Moscow and walk around it. We would also have paid hundreds just to own a couple of fighters or even more to own a B17 but we would pay it! :-)

God RSI have done a garbage job of delivering....

They should have restricted themselves to single system from the outset and gone with no FTLtravel. Something like the TV series "the expanse"

I dread to think how much an Escort Carrier would cost, plus it would all run at about 15 FPS when 10 or more people are playing.

I've also imagined the same with a Star Wars setting, or 18th Century sailing setting.

I've been watching The Expanse to get my gritty sci fi fix while CIG get around to actually delivering.

For what it's worth, the planets in this demo are in the same star system as the current playable area and as the moons in the previous demo/next release (with the exception of one of the moons, which is supposed to be in a different system but is in the current one for now), they're just that slow at developing.

The quantum drive is just for travelling in-system at 0.2c (the journey in the demo took around 8 minutes between the planets, but it was cut out in that youtube edit).

For the record, the civil aviation sims have been producing this level of sim for years. FSX / FSW, P3D, XP10 / XP11, AF-F2S all model the entire world with stunning realism and intricate details. Take a look at FSDT or OrbX for an idea of the quality. There are 1000s of aircraft modelled, from simple free-ware community builds to seriously professional study-level aircraft, with full avionics and hard-core engine management (not this toy-stuff that the IL2 series call engine management).

Whenever I played FSX I always wished one of these third party terrain makers would release a historical terrain pack, say 1920 - 1950 or something, rather than having to fly around in a 1930s aircraft over modern towns and cities.

Not really. When they allow you to wake up in your barracks, put on your flight gear, walk to the briefing room then drive a truck out to your bomber where you and your friends all climb in via the hatch and walk to your stations, take off and do a low pass to see your other squadmates through the window of the briefing room and if they look out they can see you waving from the cockpit & gunner positions. You then fly somewhere else, land and get a bus to town, *then* you have what SC already does. :-) Yes, being a space sim it is not modelling historic flight envelopes and switches but if they had made a WW2 sim instead of a Space sim then it would. I am fine with you saying 'I only want to sit in the cockpit and look at the scenery. Who cares about what happens outside the aircraft?' but that misses the point of my post.

Years back I had an addon for MFS that allowed you to fly Amelia Earharts Electra round the world and each field on the route was a 1930s version. It also had the old nav beacons (only where they existed in 1937) It was great fun.

Fair enough. You only mentioned ferrying a B24 from America to Alexandria, driving a Panzer from Germany to Paris, etc., and not the briefing-room bit, so I misunderstood what you were getting at.

There are some historic packs. WWII Pacific Islands for X-Plane springs to mind.

But I agree completely that it would be cool to have some historical cities instead of just the modern counterparts.
