Taking The Plunge...

Postby ATAG_Vortex » Thu Aug 25, 2016 8:43 am

OK, so I'm seriously thinking of getting into SC.

Is it worth waiting until 3.0 or going ahead now?

And if now, then what is the best package to run with?

Are there dedicated Sqn's out there anyone can recommend?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

If your main interest is in the large scale 'Persistant Universe' stuff like in the 3.0 presentation then I'd say wait until 3.0, as the current implementation of the PU suffers a lot from low performance due to the netcode, which is supposed to be updated in 3.0.

If you're into just shooting at people in fighter vs fighter combat in a small area then you might consider getting it now, as the Arena Commander game mode is pretty well developed.

If you're on the fence then you might want to wait for a free fly event, which happen every few months and let you test all the modules, usually with a few different ships.

And if now, then what is the best package to run with?

I think these days it's £35 for the basic Star Citizen package, or £35 for Squadron 42, which is the single player game akin to a modern Wing Commander remake, or £47 for both Star Citizen and Squadron 42.

There are two starter ships, either the Aurora MR or the Mustang Alpha - I think most people go for the Mustang as it's more nimble, and looks less like a brick. :P

I suppose it would depend on what sort of gameplay you're after, as most Squadrons (Organisations) specialise in different areas, such as military/defence/militia, piracy/smuggling, trading, bounty hunting, mining, commercial passenger transporting, etc.

Here are a few of the organisations that people here are part of (you can also affiliate with multiple organisations, rather than join them fully, but you can only fully join one)

Storm of War:

(I think the SoW Organisation is more of a 'Virtual Battle of Britain Veteran's Group' than an active organisation, unless they intend to do stuff with it?)

Squadron 19 (Reserve)
Military Squadron, UEENR Member
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/SQUADRON19

92 East India (Trading) Squadron
Trading/Combat?
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/92SQN

Tactical Advance
Trading/Combat/Exploration
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/TADVANCE

ANON6 Space Industries:
Exploration/Industry?
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/ANON6

United Empire of Earth Naval Reserves:
Large Scale Military/Logistics
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/UEENR

(With the UEENR you can either join them directly as a member, or join a Squadron that is part of the UEENR, sort of like in SoW where there is the RAF and the Luftwaffe, but below that there are Squadrons that are part of the RAF or Luftwaffe.)

I joined a few days ago. Here are my thoughts:-

Yes there are FPS issues. Hopefully they will be fixed.

I am finding combat almost impossible with a joystick as the FPS issues make it hard to fly smoothly and keep the target in the crosshairs. Using a mouse is slightly better but still very hard. My graphics card is useless so with a better card you might be OK.

It is still beta so there are issues, notably clipping which means when I enter my ship my head pokes through the roof unless I crouch. I can also leave the ship by deliberately forcing my way through the wall. I have done the same on the station ie deliberately walked through walls.

Bottom line, at the moment I cannot do much more than explore the base (which is quite limited) and practice landings and learn how everything works (the info for newbies is not very good) but I know it will get better month by month so I will just be patient (and look into getting a better graphics card).

Hi Dixon...

Many thanks indeed for all the information, it is really appreciated.

I'm going to research it a bit more and then take the plunge but will probably wait for the free flight event.

The info on the various organisations is really interesting and again I thank you for posting it up, especially the links.

Cheers...

Hi Roblex...

Thanks for the info as well, again much appreciated. Walking through walls, hmmmmmmm!!!

But at least you are getting to know how everything works, which will give you an advantage.

Thanks again...

Honestly, I'd wait until Squadron 42 drops. There's not much to to in SC until then and the PU performance is terrible.
