56RAF - Firebirds

Postby No.54 Philstyle (KL-P) » Wed Oct 29, 2014 8:15 am

Just thought I'd put a wee write-up here about 56 Squadron.
Any of the guys from 56 are welcome to correct this, but I thought you chaps deserved a promotional thread.

56 are a "high-realism" group who fly mainly RAF (but have also been seen dabbling in the Blue aircraft).
56RAF have a long history in flight sims and are one of the "stand-out" squadrons when it comes to team play (formation flying organised missions).

56RAF fly regularly on all of the popular Cliffs of Dover servers. 56RAF train their pilots to a high standard, they are a very good option for players with a little experience already who are ready to try their hand at the next level of online flying.

56RAF can be contacted via their "contacts" page here;

Very kind words Phil, probably too kind ;), but i will add a bit.

1. 56sqn sometimes gets a bit of ribbing because a large proportion of us are retired. I believe our youngest regular flying members are in their 30s but younger pilots are more than welcome. You would probably not realise the ages anyway. I was flying for several months before I realised I was not the oldest, not by a long chalk :-)

2. We have just two official squad nights, Wednesday & Sunday from 20:00 to when we get sleepy which can be as early as 22:00 (see point 1 :D ) but often continues to 23:00 if we are having particular fun. Attendance is not compulsory.
Addendum 2016: See latest post about altered squad nights.

3. We have no hierarchy though once a year some poor pilot fails to step backwards fast enough and is voted in as squadron leader which basically means he is tasked with deciding what we should do on squad night.

4. There is no formal entrance test and we will accept anyone who is capable of taking off. We regularly adopt waifs & strays who turn up in out Teamspeak channel and ask to join us for the evening and often they have only weeks or even 'days' experience in CLoD (it is impressive how good they usually are)

5. We don't enforce much discipline other than preferring to take off together and fly in loose formation comprised of pairs keeping in visual range of the squadron leader and his wingman. We would also prefer pilots who enjoy getting home alive regardless of damage (and we will try to help them get home) We also need people willing to disengage when the squadron leader decides it is time to re-group and rtb.

6. When the situation demands it, at least half our squad are happy to fly bombers but anyone that would rather not is free to fly escort. Our bombing tends to be of the 'Fly low. hit hard' variety so anyone who wants regular level bombing experience may not find us suitable. We do have some very good navigators though which is essential when flying at 50ft.

Several of the retired members are ex RAF (non-flying) and we also include two Dutchmen, one of whom is ex Dutch Airforce and ex KLM. Both are deadly. The remainder of us are aviation enthusiasts, though not 'anoraks' :D.
Addendum 2016: We now have three deadly Dutch and one deadly Pole.

We do have a website but to be honest it is hardly ever used and we usually communicate via a Yahoo mail group.

You will not be surprised to hear that we approve of such dabbling!

That said, 56RAF are worthy opponents. We will be sending them the repair bills for our bullet-ridden Ju 88s presently.

Salute!

Bearing in mind Roblex's point number 1., it has only taken me five months to discover this thread!

I thought I would add on the subject of age that our youngest member is now 18/19 years old but joined us at 15 yrs. It's unusual for someone so young to stick with the learning curve (not to mention the unmentionable noises produced by some of our oldest members). Actually he is quite an accomplished CoD video maker too.

I think I am the oldest now, being officially retired a couple of years ago. So, that kind of sets the current age boundaries. The rest of the guys are spread across the ages in between so we are definitely not ageist other than asking for a degree of friendly maturity and a sense of humour.

Update:

Squad nights are now officially Sunday and Thursday. Currently we are also unofficially flying Tuesday as that is when the biggest Blue presence is online but attendance on any squad night is never compulsory. We do discourage solo play though as it carries greater risk and airframes are precious.

Rather than a fixed 20:00 start we are now saying 19:00 or 20:00 but discouraging starts in between. To put that another way, half our squadron are happy to start at 19:00 because Blue seem to be starting around that time but some cannot make that time and will continue turning up for 20:00 when we can all launch/re-launch together.

Roblex, you could switch out any reference to "56RAF" for "No.54" and it'd read like no change for us ... interesting that our groups tend to track with each so much.
